Project Agreement Tutorials // 20.04.23

On the right, I have included both of the 'Project Profiles' for both projects A and B. I found these worksheets useful for developing upon my initial ideation into more substantial outcomes that have a clearer intention from concept to realisation. Whilst these projects are drawing upon my own lived experiences, I think that it would be beneficial to also reference and take inspiration of other narratives in order to create something that is able to provoke a stronger reaction from an audience.

In this session, I discussed these 'Project Profiles' and a brief outline of the rationale behind my work and received some feedback from my peers and tutors. I have summarised all of my feedback into the bullet points below:

PROJECT A:

The idea of the "Shoebox Apartment" and presenting this piece as if I was a landlord/agent trying to sell is an effective satirical piece; the exaggerated scale of using a physical shoebox emphasises the struggles that people face trying to find enough space for an affordable price.
I was recommended to look at Monty Python's Flying Circus - "Four Yorkshiremen" (first performed in 1967), a comedy sketch parodying nostalgic conversations about humble beginnings or difficult childhoods. In the sketch, they consider living in a cardboard shoebox a "luxury" as their accounts become increasingly absurd as they try to outdo each other about having the most deprived childhood.
This prompted me to consider creating various test pieces that experiment with defining home; in addition to a miniature 3D sculpture, I plan to make a 2D drawing of a building front with scrap cardboard to demonstrate how people have to pay extremely high rent just to live in London. Whilst in the same vein discussing the London housing crisis, I think this particular outcome may be interpreted as a statement on homelessness.

PROJECT B:

Although deeply personal, feedback from my tutor and peers stated that they thought that this experience would resonate with a wide audience, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic with numerous lockdowns and mask laws being introduced. Sharing my experiences with my peers, some countries had much stricter regulations than others and many people were afraid of leaving their homes.
Doing some more research online, I found a statistic where in 2019, 301 million people were living with an anxiety disorder including 58 million children and adolescents (Mental disorders (who.int), accessed April 22, 2023). During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in people reporting high levels of anxiety, though these levels have begun to decrease since then (Anxiety: statistics | Mental Health Foundation, accessed April 22, 2023) and I think that the majority of people have experienced or known someone with some kind of anxieties about any particular topic, the pandemic as one example.
What type of imagery, shape language and colours will I use?
Is there a universal recognition of specific colours that evoke a certain emotion?
How do you visualise anxiety?
